Local Flavor: Swarm of Cattle

A typical scene on roads from near by town gives me a local flavor everytime I cross the highway. The passing cattle bring the traffic to stand still. We often face traffic jams because of this swarm crossing the road at its own convenient speed. The Indian cattle love to  take nap right in the middle of the road. Stuck in one of such jams I captured this one.

Livestock  are valuable assets for the rural people where cows and buffaloes are reared for milk and other dairy products. In India cows have significant religious meaning. Buffaloes are bit lazy, it is reared for meat and milk production.

The best part is that no one seems to get irritated, rather people wait patiently for them to cross the road, few people who are in hurry blow horn occasionally but the cattle keep maintaining their slow walk. It is a scene which put foreign tourists in shock. They can’t imagine something like this in their country. We call it ‘harmony with livestock’ or ‘right to equality’ after all the cows and buffaloes have all the right to walk on earth.
