I Listen to My Heart

Make an important decision? Only way I know is to listen to my heart. It is a big risk and I can’t blame anyone later on if it proves wrong. I have been taking decisions based purely on instincts, so far proved lucky for me. It could have ruined my life if went wrong. Be it choosing a work place or choosing a life partner I believed in that little voice in the back of my mind (or call it intuition) and I took wise decisions.

I think most women go by their gut or so called “sixth sense”. God has given us the unique quality to sense the danger or preempt the situation we are going to grip in.  Not necessary everyone follows gut. Women are head strong at times.

An essential interdependence exists between our brain and our gut. It can be felt when we meet someone for the first time. I try to “trust my gut instinct” while making an important decision. I would rather explain in a way that it’s “gut check time” when faced with a situation that tests our intention and determination. This mind-gut connection is not just symbolic but actual does wonders at times.

And how can we make sure that we have better gut instincts?

To train ourselves we need to introspect and explore our gut instincts, not just use them with some vague irrational feelings. One really has to “know Thyself” and take the pains to do that inner work to use their gut feelings successfully in decision-making. Gut instincts are not merely just “pattern recognition brain impressions”, infact these patterns are certainly a result of our gut intelligence combined with our thinking and that’s where the trick is.

There is a flip side too. Medical daily.com describes it like this,  “We often talk about intuition coming from the body — following our gut instincts and trusting our hearts,” the study’s coauthor Barnaby D. Dunn, of the Medical Research Council Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit in Cambridge, UK, said in a press release. “What happens in our bodies really does appear to influence what goes in our minds. We should be careful about following these gut instincts, however, as sometimes they help and sometimes they hinder our decision making.”

So next time during shopping when my heart says that I must go for the black dress but the brain reminds me of all those black dresses stuffed in the wardrobe then it would be interesting to see whether heart wins over logic or not. What about you?

I will be waiting for some answers to the following questions: Do you believe in your “second brain” ? How do you know when your gut feelings are reliable?
