While on a trip to Tawang,Arunachal Pradesh,India, when reached Sela Pass enroute to Tawang town, we were amazed to see the beauty of colorful prayer flags. What a sight it was ! The entire area was infested with these  colorful rectangular cloth, often found strung along mountain ridges and peaks high in the Himalayas.
Five colors depict the five elements of nature and they purify the air and bless the surrounding countryside. The moment you see these colorful Buddhist flags you start feeling Buddha’s grace on you ! To me these five colors symbolizes peace, compassion, strength, wisdom and humanity.
After a steep climb and difficult journey of two days, the glimpse of this sign board was like a fresh lease of life for us.The fatigue was vanished at once. The view was breath taking, serene and divine. I sat there, looked at the red, blue, green, white and yellow invitation to Land of  Lamas and monks. Traditionally, prayer flags are used to promote peace, humanity, knowledge and teachings of Buddha. Â The flags are generally mistaken as the carriers of prayers to God, contrary to this misconception, the Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras will be blown by the wind to spread the goodwill and compassion into the environment. Therefore, prayer flags are supposed to bring happiness and prosperity to all.
Just as old cycle gives way to the new Tibetans renew their hopes for the world by continually mounting new flags alongside the old. They welcome  and acknowledge the new changes that happen in life, where all beings are part of a greater ongoing cycle.

Prayer flags are empowering. I hang them every year at Losar with riwo sang chod and lungta offerings & Pujas. I have them around my cabin.
