Sangetser Lake: Nature’s Pride

Tell us about the last experience you had that left you feeling fresh, energized, and rejuvenated. What was it that had such a positive effect on you?

This may not be the latest visit of mine but definitely the most rejuvenating one. I would love to visit it at any given opportunity. I hope you will agree with me.

The Himalayan landscapes are bound to hypnotize anyone with its unparalleled beauty and scenery in the world. I am one of those fortunate ones who has spent a considerable period of my married life on this mighty blessing of nature. I sincerely believe the lakes of Himalayas are like a jewels of queen nature and the flora found here is like a vanity for her make up.You have not seen nature if You have not been to Himalayan lakes.

It was indeed one of the most exciting moment of my life when I approached Sangetsar Lake, at an altitude of 12,000 ft, 35 km north east of Tawang district, in the Eastern Himalayas of Arunachal Pradesh. Amidst a mix of spirituality, serenity & tranquility, this lake nestles between huge mountains, considered holy by the Buddhists. The view from distance is breathtakingly beautiful. DSC_3993 The bare trunks of dead trees jutting out of this lake seems like guardians of mother nature guarding the abundance of flora & fauna in the region……..a sight etched in my memory from the moment I saw it!!!!  Beauty is unmatched, best combination of water, earth and sky elements I have seen till date. DSC_3995 This lake was formed during the earthquake of 1950. A very interesting story is there behind this lake formation. It was a grazing ground until an earthquake struck and converted this place into a piece of solitude. During the earthquake that hit this part of the world and the ensuing geological shift, the lake moved its position from its earlier location to a pine forest nearby. The move was such a miracle of nature that it drowned the entire forest except for the top of the tree trunks that can still be seen jutting out, even today. The cool breeze blows during sunny days which turns cold and biting by evening.

Enroute to lake we witnessed plethora of big and small clear mountain lakes which were also very beautiful. The lake is popularly known as Madhuri Lake after the famous Bollywood blockbuster KOYLA (starring Shahrukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit) which was shot here. One requires a special permit from the District Commissioner’s (DC) office located at Tawang to visit this lake. Only Indian nationals are allowed here.

The lake is surrounded by a pathway for the discerning traveller who wishes to explore it from all directions. In fact the walk around the lake was the high point of my visit as I was able to absorb the beauty of the surroundings at close quarters.

Indeed the walk in the shadows of mighty Himalayas was divine……it not only uplifts your inner spirits but also makes you feel blessed for allowing one to have tête-à-tête with nature.

    1. Thanks. I still feel that it is much more beautiful view than what it looks in the photos. and no way the tranquility of the lake forest can be captured in the lens.
